Subject: GCG suite is discontinued as of January 2nd, 2009
In June 2008, Accelrys discontinued support and development of the GCG suite of programs. Due to licensing issues, GCG will not be released to the public domain as open source software.
The CGB has a license to run our existing copy of GCG indefinitely. However, due to issues with operating system compatibility and a lack of continued support and updates from Accelrys, we are simply unable to continue supporting or offering GCG.
GCG usage has declined drastically in the past few years, and as such, GCG will be discontinued as of January 2nd, 2009. Users should note that this is our planned termination date, but circumstances may force the discontinuation of GCG prior to this date. For those who access GCG either from the command line or web interface, your files will, of course, remain intact in your home directory.
We do offer a nice alternative to GCG known as EMBOSS, which includes both command line tools and a slick web interface called EMBOSS Explorer. We're working on updating the BioPortal website to help users transition to using these tools. In the meantime, the NIH provides a GCG to EMBOSS mapping guide that helps you determine which EMBOSS programs you will be interested in.
