Software Tools :: Genetic Computer Group Software
Introduction
GCG is a research tool originally created at the University of Wisconsin, then
developed and marketed by Genetics Computer Group, Inc. (GCG), now known as
Accelrys Software Inc. It is a suite of tools that perform various protein and
nucleic acid analyses. We provide a convenient list of the available GCG
programs sorted by function. GCG
provides access to a plethora of databases from within these tools, including
but not limited to:
- EMBL - Nucleotide Sequence Database
- ENSEMBL - Genome Sequence Database
- PFAM - Multiple Sequence Alignment Database
- PIR - Protein Sequence Database
- SWISSPROT - Protein Sequence Database
- TREMBL - Computer-annotated supplement to Swiss-Prot
- GENPEPT - Transplated Coding Sequence Database
- NCBI - GenBank Databases

Accessing the Programs
Access to GCG requires a CGB Research Computing account. For information on
obtaining an account, please visit our
account sign-up page. There are
several ways to access GCG after you have an account:
Via the command line interface:
- Connect to research.cgb.indiana.edu via an SSH client (e.g. ssh
username@research.cgb.indiana.edu)
- At the Unix prompt, type in 'source /bioportal/sw/pkgs/gcg/gcgstartup'
- You may now begin running the various applications (i.e. type 'map' to make
a restriction map)
Via the graphical user interface:
- Make sure that you have an X Window Server installed for your operating
system
- Connect to research.cgb.indiana.edu via an SSH client using X11 forwarding
(e.g. ssh -X username@research.cgb.indiana.edu)
- At the Unix prompt, type in 'source /bioportal/sw/pkgs/gcg/gcgstartup'
- At the Unix prompt, type in 'seqlab'
Via the web interface:
Launch the
web interface to GCG (
Advanced mode interface)
This website will look much better in a browser that supports
web standards, but it has been designed so
that it is still usable and accessible to any browser or web-enabled device.
