Bioinformatics: Sequence and Genome Analysis
By David Mount
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, 2001

ISBN:0879696087

Summary:
A recent, well-written single-author text on bioinformatics, suitable for biologists as well as bioinformatics students. It emphasizes understanding of methods, algorithms and data of the field without programming, extensive math or computer science. It is more balanced in its subject presentation, and broader in scope than several other of the books listed here. Its orientation toward biology rather computation/algorithms and informatics aspects is consistent with how this field has developed and its goals of biology information analysis.

It includes a history of the field, and is strong in its explanation of the biology underpinnings of bioinformatics. Though published in 2001, it is material developed for a course thru the 1990s, which for the most part is still up to date. Overall, except for its price ($95 paper, $150 hardcover) an excellent book.
